Guide No. 005: How to Authenticate a Hermes Handbag

Begin with identity

Name the model, size, leather and hardware

A Birkin, Kelly, Constance, Evelyne, Bolide, Picotin and Garden Party are constructed differently. Even within one family, sellier and retourne constructions create different edges and silhouettes. Establish the exact configuration before comparing details.

Measure the bag rather than trusting a listing title. Record closure, pockets, handle drop, feet, strap, clochette, lock, keys and hardware finish. Research whether the claimed leather and colour were plausible for the stated period.

Read the leather

Natural grain should behave naturally

Hermès states that it uses full-grain leather whose natural wrinkles, veins and pores remain visible. Different leathers vary dramatically: some are firm and finely grained, others soft, pebbled or prone to patina. A generic smell or scratch test is not reliable.

Compare grain scale, hand, edge behaviour and ageing with confirmed examples of the same leather. Watch for printed texture that repeats mechanically, thick surface coating, colour sitting over thread or a seller who cannot name the material yet makes confident authenticity claims.

Follow the construction

Saddle stitching is a technique, not a slogan

Traditional saddle stitching is created with two needles working a single thread through the same holes. On relevant seams, observe the rhythm, angle, tension, back-stitching and finishing. Handwork can show minute human variation without becoming careless.

Do not count stitches against a universal internet rule. Stitch density changes with model, seam and material. Machine-like perfection does not prove a fake, and an irregular stitch does not prove authenticity. Ask whether any seam has been repaired.

Examine edges and architecture

Shape reveals how the bag was built

Study the handle bases, gussets, flap, sangles, piping, resin edges and base. The bag should open, close and stand in a manner consistent with its model and construction. Sellier edges should read differently from softer retourne construction.

Look for symmetry without expecting an untouched vintage bag. Overloading, humidity and poor storage can distort genuine leather. The important question is whether the underlying pattern and assembly remain coherent.

Test the hardware thoughtfully

Mechanics, engraving and ageing must agree

Hermès describes much of its leather-goods hardware as exclusive, traditionally made in materials such as brass and finished in gold, palladium or permabrass. Check weight, movement, polish, engraving, screws, feet, lock and key as a connected set.

Hardware should operate cleanly and age plausibly beside the leather. A replaced plate or refurbished lock may be legitimate, but the work and service history should be disclosed. Never use magnet response as a universal authentication test.

Interpret stamps in context

Blind stamps are evidence, not certificates

Inspect the house stamp, origin wording, blind or date stamp and any craftsman marks for placement, letterform, depth and relationship to the leather. Formats and locations have evolved and can vary by model.

A code that maps to a plausible year does not prove that the bag around it is genuine. Counterfeiters study public charts. Confirm that the claimed year is consistent with the model configuration, material, hardware and provenance.

Assess provenance and service

Paperwork must connect to the object

An invoice, raincoat, felt, box, dust bag, strap, lock and keys can add context, but each can become separated from its original bag. Match descriptions, dates and components without exposing private customer information.
