Identify before comparing

Establish the model, size and era

A Classic 11.12, 2.55, Boy, Gabrielle, Wallet on Chain and seasonal runway bag should not be judged by one universal checklist. Chanel itself describes the 11.12 through specific signatures including the double-C turn-lock, leather-interlaced chain, smile pocket, double flap and quilting. Other families use different structures.

Record dimensions, material, colour, hardware tone, pocket layout, strap drop and claimed year. Compare only with the same model family and a close production period. Reissues and seasonal variations can legitimately alter details.

• Do the dimensions and proportions match the claimed size?
• Does the pocket and flap configuration belong to that model?
• Is the hardware finish plausible for the colour and season?
• Is the claimed age consistent with the identifier and construction?

Read the silhouette

Study structure, quilting and alignment

View the empty bag square-on. The flap should sit with the balance expected of its design, while the base, sides and corners should form a coherent silhouette. Overstuffing and age can soften a genuine bag, so distinguish use from construction.

On quilted styles, follow the pattern across the flap, body and rear pocket. Alignment should look deliberate, but do not rely on a fixed stitch count: quilting scale varies by model, size, material and era. Check whether puffiness, seam placement and edge finishing agree with reliable comparisons.

Let the material speak

Examine leather, lining and natural wear

Chanel uses lambskin, grained calfskin, patent leather, tweed, jersey, exotic materials and many seasonal treatments. Lambskin is known for suppleness and can acquire fine marks; grained calfskin behaves differently. Chanel advises appreciating natural patina and avoiding products that may alter the finish.

Look for age that develops logically at corners, chain contact points, flap edges and handles. Plastic-feeling leather, a uniform sprayed surface, colour across thread or stiffened quilting may indicate unsuitable restoration or a questionable object. Ask directly about recolouring and repairs.

Inspect the metalwork

Assess chain, turn-lock and hardware as a system

Check the weight, movement, finish and attachment of the chain and closures. Interlaced leather should be cut, joined and threaded consistently with the model. The CC turn-lock should be centred and proportionate, and screws or backplates should match close period references.

Hardware is repairable and may have been replaced legitimately. A single screw type is not proof either way. Look instead for inconsistent plating, rough casting, shallow engraving, loose attachment or a new component that conflicts with the surrounding age.

Read the house marks

Compare typography and interior construction

Inspect the CHANEL and origin stamps for placement, spacing, letterform, application and relationship to the interior material. Foil can fade with use; embossing can soften. Compare with the same model and era rather than an online image of a different bag.

Turn pockets gently, inspect seams and follow the lining into corners without forcing it. The interior should show the same design discipline as the exterior. Glue residue, crude raw edges, unexplained loose fabric or conflicting fonts deserve scrutiny.

Use identifiers correctly

Serial systems support; they do not decide

Chanel has used different identification systems across periods. Vintage number stickers and corresponding cards are not equivalent to later methods, and not every genuine older bag retains its card or a perfectly legible sticker. Counterfeiters also reproduce numbers, cards and packaging.

Assess whether the format is plausible for the claimed period and whether its application, typography and ageing agree with the bag. Never publish a full identifier unnecessarily, and never buy solely because an online number lookup produces a plausible year.

Make the decision

Combine evidence and protect the purchase

Ask for current photographs of every panel, the base, corners, chain, hardware, stamps, identifier area and all included accessories. Compare the bag with Chanel-owned pages, reputable auction records and several close examples.

If the seller will not provide images, discourages independent review or explains every inconsistency as a rare variation, step back. For a high-value purchase, use a documented third-party opinion and a payment method with clear recourse.
